The Telephone box held an important role in Irish society until the late 1980's as many homes didn't have house phones. From 2009 onwards nearly all original telephone boxes were destroyed. There are a few remaining throughout Ireland, that serve more as a tourist attraction. However some have taken on a new role as the housing defibrillators.
